Transports in MilanoUnless you took a car with you from your home country, you will have to deal with the public transportation, which in Milan is managed by ATM. There is a very good subway net, with three lines crossing the whole city and a good amount of buses and trams, which will get you almost anywhere you want. The price for one ticket in the city area is € 1 and it is valid for one trip or 75 min's. There are also a 24h ticket and a "carnet" which is ten tickets for a lower price. But you are probably more interested in a monthly or even yearly card. The good news are that there are both and they are pretty cheap for students. The monthly ticket costs € 17 every month, plus € 10 the first time for the card and a picture. The cost of a yearly card is about € 160 and it is valit 12 months.
Mobile phone operatorsIn Italy there are four mobile phones operators: TIM, Vodafone, Wind and 3. Generally speaking, TIM offers the best services, while Wind offers the best prices. But as price competition is very tough, all the companies always offer periodical promotions, so check on their websites which one fits best your needs in terms of duration of the promotion, if it’s focused on calls, sms or internet and if it includes international calls! To get a phone number you can choose between signing a contract, (that in Italy is not that common and it’s more complicated cause you need a document called Codice Fiscale) or buying a SIM card (for maximum 5 Euros) with a standard profile upon which you can then activate options or promotions. With a SIM you have to buy a recharge when your phone is out of money. You can buy them in any Tabacchi store or in your operator’s stores. These are some options examples: “Call your Country” allowing to call home anytime at 30 cents per minute; “Free sms” with a certain amount of text messages per month within the numbers of the same operator, and/or a certain amount of texts per month towards all the operators, paid with a fixed monthly amount; “free calls” or “internet non-stop” with the same kind of conditions.
